Henry Asante Twum says GFA’s need to consult Sports Ministry on Otto Addo’s future

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is consulting the Ministry of Youth and Sports regarding the future of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, as explained by GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum.

Otto Addo’s position has come under scrutiny following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations—a painful setback, marking the first time in 25 years that the Black Stars will miss the tournament.

According to Twum, the GFA Executive Council has been in discussions with the Sports Ministry over several issues related to the national team. He emphasized the importance of these consultations, noting that any financial obligations, such as severance pay in the event of Addo’s dismissal, would ultimately fall on the ministry and the government.

“It depends on where you sit, but the council is referring to the ministry on a number of issues. They have every means to consult the ministry,” Henry Asante Twum said in an interview with Joy FM.
“This is because, finally, when you even take a decision to fire the coach and there is an issue about paying him off, it is the responsibility of the ministry and the government to pay him off.”

On November 27, 2024, Otto Addo submitted a report to the GFA Executive Council, analyzing the factors behind the team’s disappointing performances. However, the meeting ended without a final decision on his future. The GFA has indicated that further consultations with key stakeholders, including the government, will be necessary before making a definitive call.
