Pep Guardiola has taken full responsibility for Manchester City’s shocking downturn in form after their dramatic 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday. The loss extends City’s dismal run to just one win in their last 11 matches across all competitions, with eight defeats in that stretch.
City, winners of the last four Premier League titles, now find themselves nine points behind league leaders Liverpool and outside the Champions League spots in fifth.
Reflecting on the situation, Guardiola admitted his shortcomings. “I don’t have a defence; I’m the boss, I’m the manager. I have to find a solution, and I haven’t. I’m not good enough—it’s as simple as that,” he confessed.
City appeared poised for a morale-boosting victory after Josko Gvardiol’s first-half header put them in control. However, a costly mistake by Matheus Nunes led to Bruno Fernandes’ late penalty equalizer, followed by Amad Diallo’s 90th-minute winner, leaving City stunned.
Guardiola dismissed excuses, stating, “The schedule, the injured players—no. This is a big club. When you lose eight out of 11, something is seriously wrong.”
The Spanish tactician acknowledged the difficulty of the season but expressed surprise at the severity of the team’s struggles. “I knew it would be a tough season. I said it many times, even when we were winning. But I didn’t expect it to be this hard.”
With City’s hopes of defending their title dwindling, Guardiola faces immense pressure to find solutions and revive his team’s fortunes.
