Amorim demands more after Manchester United’s 2-2 draw at Liverpool

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim praised his team’s fighting spirit in their pulsating 2-2 draw with Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday but admitted he was left wanting more from his players.

In a heated contest at Anfield, Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo ended United’s five-year scoring drought at the iconic venue, securing a hard-earned point. The result marked a turnaround in attitude after United’s recent struggles, including a series of home defeats.

“Today, I might be the only one upset,” Amorim said post-match. “But we showed the mentality we need. It wasn’t about tactics or systems—it was about how we approached the game. That intensity is how we should play every day, in training and in matches.”

Despite climbing to 13th in the table, United remain far from the top-four race, sitting 13 points behind fourth-placed Chelsea. However, the spirited performance brought hope to fans who braved the trip to Anfield.

Captain Bruno Fernandes echoed Amorim’s sentiments, expressing frustration despite the positive result.
“I’m upset. If we can perform like this against Liverpool, why not everywhere?” Fernandes remarked.

Amorim pointed to focus and consistency as key areas for improvement.
“It’s clear we need to fix our defensive lapses, especially at home,” he said. “It’s about discipline—losing the ball in the wrong areas against players like Salah and Diaz means we’ll suffer. If we keep this mentality daily, we’ll be a different team.”

United nearly snatched victory in the dying moments, with Harry Maguire missing a golden opportunity. Former captain Roy Keane warned the team against complacency, saying, “You can’t pick and choose when to show up for Manchester United.”
