Ghana’s 2009 U-20 World Cup winners will each receive 60,000 Ghana cedis from a government investment after their exploits at the tournament about two decades ago.
The team made history in Cairo by beating Brazil in a thrilling penalty shootout after a goalless 120 minutes, despite being reduced to 10 men after Daniel Addo’s first-half red card.
Coach Sellas Tetteh’s team displayed incredible resilience to secure the trophy and went on to make history as the first African team to win the tournament.
Following their historic victory, then-President John Evans Atta Mills launched a 15-year investment plan, allocating 10,000 Ghana cedis for each player.
SAS Finance Group, the managing firm, has confirmed the funds’ maturity and notified the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to inform the players of their deserving rewards, as per reports.
While some players have already received their cheques, others can claim theirs by presenting their Ghana Cards, as stated in a GFA communiqué.
SAS also revealed that the investment package included annual insurance coverage for life and health-related expenses for each player throughout the period.
Ghana’s U-20 World Cup triumph in 2009 remains the country’s sole success at that level to date.
