Bibiani Gold Stars defender Vincent Atinga has voiced concerns over the financial challenges faced by players in the Ghana Premier League (GPL), and says there’s a need for improved salaries to sustain careers and retain talent within the league.
Atinga described playing in the league as difficult due to inadequate pay, prompting many players to seek better opportunities in leagues across Ethiopia, Zambia, Sudan, and Rwanda.
Vincent Atinga highlighted that the low salaries make it challenging for players to manage basic expenses such as rent and fuel.
He suggested the introduction of a salary cap, and proposed a minimum monthly wage of GH₵1,000 for players.
He also explained that better compensation would discourage players from leaving the league for contracts in countries where even modest wages convert into significant earnings in Ghana.
Atinga noted the improved quality and excitement in this season’s league, and emphasized the urgency of addressing the financial struggles faced by players.
He urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to implement measures to ensure players earn a decent living, which he believes is crucial for saving the league and preventing further talent drain.
