GFA backs Otto Addo despite AFCON qualifying failure

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has decided to retain Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars, despite the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in two decades.

Dr. Randy Abbey, Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, confirmed the decision, emphasizing a focus on upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers. “The GFA is keeping Otto Addo. It’s about changing the poor trend of results and putting the Black Stars back on the winning path,” Abbey stated on Original FM.

Addo, who took charge in early 2024 following Ghana’s underwhelming performance at the 2023 AFCON, failed to secure a win in six qualifying matches. However, he will continue his three-year contract, which includes an option for a two-year extension.

To address the team’s struggles, the GFA plans to revamp Addo’s backroom staff, with assistant coaches Joseph Lauman, John Paintsil, and goalkeeper coach Fatau Dauda reportedly set to be replaced.

The Black Stars will resume competitive action in March, facing Chad and Madagascar in their bid to secure a spot at the 2026 World Cup.
