Azamati urges Government to invest in young talent

Ghanaian sprint sensation Benjamin Azamati has called on the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to prioritize investing in young athletes to boost the country’s future in athletics.

Speaking on Prime Sports on JoyNews, Azamati, who shattered Ghana’s 22-year-old national 100m record in 2021, emphasized the need for early development programs. He pointed to nations like the United States, where young athletes are nurtured early, enabling them to compete and excel on the global stage by their mid-teens.

“Investment should go into the kids,” Azamati stated. “When we go to the World U20 Games, we hardly see Ghanaian athletes competing. This needs to change. We must ensure our kids fall in love with sports.”

Azamati, a member of Ghana’s 4x100m relay team set to compete in the Paris Olympics, believes a focus on youth development will enhance the country’s competitiveness in international athletics.

In line with his vision, Azamati is set to host the Ghana Junior Olympics on December 26, 2024, at the University of Ghana Stadium. The event aims to inspire and showcase young talent, providing a platform to identify future stars in Ghanaian athletics.
