Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal is set to be out for three to four weeks after sustaining a Grade 1 ligament injury to his right ankle during Sunday’s 1-0 La Liga defeat to Leganes.
The club confirmed the injury through a statement on Monday, adding that Yamal will miss Barcelona’s final match of the year against Atletico Madrid this Saturday. The 17-year-old was hurt in a first-half challenge but continued playing until his substitution in the 75th minute.
The injury also rules Lamine Yamal out of Barcelona’s Copa del Rey last-32 tie against Barbastro on January 4 and the Spanish Super Cup in Jeddah later that month.
Despite their struggles, including just one win in their last six league games, Barcelona remain atop La Liga. However, Atletico Madrid have drawn level on points with a game in hand, while Real Madrid trail by a single point with their own game in hand.
Yamal’s absence will be a significant blow as Barcelona aims to regain form in their upcoming fixtures
