14-year-old referee makes history in inter-schools final

Benedict Agyei, a 14-year-old student from Asanteman Senior High School, has etched his name in history as the youngest referee to officiate the Ashanti Region Inter-School Championship final.

The groundbreaking moment took place on December 5, 2024, at the iconic Baba Yara Stadium, where Agyei oversaw the thrilling encounter between Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (OKESS) and Simms Senior High School (SIMMS). After an intense 2-2 draw in regulation and extra time, OKESS clinched victory on penalties to lift the championship trophy.

A first-year business student, Benedict Agyei is a standout participant in the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) Catch Them Young refereeing program, which aims to nurture young talents interested in professional refereeing.

His composed, fair, and professional handling of the high-pressure final has earned widespread praise, highlighting the potential of the GFA’s initiative in developing the next generation of referees.
