The Black Queens of Ghana have been placed in Group C for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which will take place in Morocco from July 5 to July 26, 2025.
The official draw was conducted by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe, alongside prominent figures in African women’s football, including 2022 AFCON-winning goalkeeper Andile Dlamini and former Moroccan international Fatiha Laassiri.
For the Black Queens, this marks a significant comeback after missing out on the 2022 tournament and exiting at the group stage in the 2018 edition, which Ghana hosted. Now, they are set to face tough competition in Group C, which includes Mali, Tanzania, and defending champions South Africa.
The tournament format allows the top two teams from each group to advance directly to the quarterfinals, with the two best third-placed teams also securing spots in the knockout stage.
Elsewhere, Group B features Algeria, Tunisia, Nigeria, and Botswana. Notably, all but Algeria participated in the 2022 edition, with Nigeria, Tunisia, and Botswana reaching the quarterfinals. Nigeria remains the competition’s most decorated team, boasting 11 titles, though they have failed to clinch the trophy in the past two tournaments.
Group A brings together host nations Morocco, Zambia, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Morocco and Zambia, both strong contenders, are expected to light up the competition in their group.
The 2025 WAFCON promises to be an exciting showcase of talent, with the Black Queens aiming to make a strong impression after their return to the tournament. Fans will be eagerly anticipating the Black Queens’ performance as they compete against some of Africa’s best teams.
The Queen’s will be hoping to bring smiles on the faces of Ghanaians after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the men’s version of the continental showpiece.
