Ghana’s Black Galaxies fell short in their bid for a second consecutive African Nations Championship (CHAN) appearance, succumbing to a 3-1 defeat against Nigeria in Uyo on Saturday. The Super Eagles delivered a decisive first-half performance to secure their place in the 2025 CHAN finals, leaving Ghana to rue defensive errors and missed chances.
The hosts wasted no time asserting dominance at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. Ismaila Sodiq capitalized on a defensive lapse to open the scoring in the 19th minute, and just three minutes later, Nduka Junior doubled the lead with a stunning strike that left Ghana’s goalkeeper helpless. Isaac Saviour added a third in the 25th minute, effectively sealing the game before halftime.
Facing a mountain to climb, the Black Galaxies struggled to respond in the first half. However, they found some rhythm in the second half and pulled one back through Stephen Amankona of Berekum Chelsea, who scored a composed effort in the 73rd minute. Despite showing urgency in the closing stages, Ghana’s comeback attempts were thwarted by a resolute Nigerian defense.
The result ended Ghana’s CHAN campaign on a disappointing note, with Nigeria exacting revenge for their elimination in the 2023 qualifiers. The defeat underscores the need for Ghana to address key defensive frailties and regain their competitive edge on the continental stage.
