GPL 2024/25: Mawuli Wayo inspires Late Hearts of Oak comeback over Accra Lions in Sogakope

Accra Hearts of Oak mounted a remarkable comeback to defeat Accra Lions at WAFA Stadium in Sogakope on Sunday afternoon, securing their second consecutive victory.

After Accra Lions drew against Aduana at Agyeman Badu Stadium, Coach Ibrahim Tanko’s side aimed to build on that result with a win at home against the Phobians. However, Hearts of Oak took the lead in the 37th minute when Muhammed Hussein scored.

The goal came after Hearts launched a quick attack, sending a well-timed through ball to Muhammad Saani, who delivered a dangerous cross from the right wing. Hussein met the cross with a powerful header, finding the back of the net.

Just seven minutes into the second half, Accra Lions’ Nigerian player Lucky Nwafor equalized. He received the ball just outside the 18-yard box, skillfully dribbled past a Hearts defender, and placed a shot into the lower left corner, evading Hearts goalkeeper Sherif Shuaib.

Coach Ibrahim Tanko made two substitutions, bringing on Ezekiel Allado and Blessing Dankwah for Nwafor Lucky and Abdul Shaku Abubakr, respectively.

Ezekiel Allado made an immediate impact by scoring in the 71st minute, putting the Lions ahead 2-1.

However, Hearts of Oak fought back, and 21-year-old Mawuli Wayo delivered an impressive performance, scoring two quick goals in the 81st and 84th minutes to regain the lead for the Phobians.

Although it was a tense encounter, Hearts’ resilience paid off, and they emerged victorious.

At the end of the match, Accra Lions recorded 61% possession and had 14 attempts on goal, with 5 on target. In contrast, Hearts of Oak had 39% possession with 12 attempts on goal, 6 of which were on target.

Looking ahead, Hearts of Oak will face Legon Cities at home, hoping to continue their recent winning streak in the new year.
