Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong has proudly embraced his Ghanaian heritage, sharing how he connects to his roots through the Twi language, which he speaks with his parents at home.
Although born in the Netherlands to Ghanaian parents, Frimpong moved to England at the age of seven. While eligible to represent Ghana, the Netherlands, and England at the international level, he ultimately chose to play for the Dutch national team. He made his senior debut for the Netherlands in 2023 during the qualifiers for the 2024 European Championship after excelling at youth level.
Speaking to Nigerian journalist Oma Akatugba after Leverkusen’s 1-0 Champions League triumph over Inter Milan, Jeremie Frimpong disclosed, “My parents are Ghanaians, so every time I speak to my parents, it is Twi. They taught me the language. I’ve never been to Ghana, but I will go.”
Frimpong, now 24, has been pivotal for Bayer Leverkusen, contributing significantly to their undefeated 2023/24 campaign, which saw them clinch the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal titles. This season, he has already scored two goals and provided six assists across the Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League, aiming to replicate or surpass his remarkable 24-goal contribution from last season.
