The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have appointed Mali’s Eric Chelle as new head coach to lead the technical bench of the Super Eagles.

The announcement puts to rest questions of a permanent appointment to the technical bench of the Super Eagles.

The RFF made the appointment valid on Tuesday, January 7, in a statement that read : “The executive committee of the NFF has endorsed the recommendation of its Technical and Development Sub-Committee for the appointment of Mr Éric Sékou Chelle as head coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team, Super Eagles,” the NFF said in a statement on Tuesday.

Since the departure of Jose Peseiro after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final, Nigeria’s men’s national team have been without a permanent head coach.

Chelle has now been appointed to lead the team in the upcoming 2026 World Cup Qualifiers in March this year as the Super Eagles sit in an unfavorable position (5th) on the standings of Group C.

Former Nigerian international Augustine Eguavoen served as interim head coach of the Super Eagles through the first stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and also led the team to book a place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
