Nora Hauptle explains Black Queens departure: “I can’t compromise”

Former Black Queens head coach Nora Hauptle has shed light on her decision to part ways with Ghana’s national women’s team after the expiration of her contract in December 2024. Hauptle, who led the team to secure a spot in this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, cited unresolved issues during contract negotiations with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) as her reason for leaving.

Speaking to Swiss outlet 20 Minutes, Hauptle described her departure as a difficult but necessary decision.

“It wasn’t easy to give up the project. My contract was running out at the end of the year, and we had discussions. But there were a few pieces of the puzzle that were not clear, which were relevant to my success,” she explained. “I can’t just make compromises. Nothing happened, so we are parting on good terms and with a lot of respect for each other.”

Hauptle’s tenure saw a turnaround in the fortunes of the Black Queens, who returned to the continental stage after missing out on qualification since 2018.

Following her exit, Hauptle has taken on the head coach role for Zambia’s Copper Queens, who will compete in Group A of the 2025 WAFCON against Morocco, Senegal, and DR Congo.
