“Nyantakyi was targeted for rejecting selfishness” – Asamoah Gyan

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has passionately defended ex-Ghana FA President Kwesi Nyantakyi, claiming his downfall was orchestrated by individuals who sought to exploit Ghana football for selfish gains.

In a candid outburst last Thursday, Gyan expressed frustration over the state of football in Ghana since Nyantakyi’s removal, describing it as a major setback for the sport.

“If someone came to him with selfish reasons, he wouldn’t accept it. That’s why they wanted him out. Since his removal as Ghana Football Association president, have you seen what has become of Ghana football?” Gyan questioned.

Gyan credited Nyantakyi for elevating Ghana football to international prominence, including his rise to become CAF Vice President. He argued that Nyantakyi’s resistance to being a “yesa massa” figure ultimately made him a target.

“Nyantakyi was leading us somewhere. He became CAF Vice President; one of the strongest people in African football. But because he wouldn’t entertain their selfish interests, they sabotaged him,” Gyan asserted.

While Nyantakyi’s tenure ended amid controversy and corruption allegations, Gyan maintained that his leadership brought significant progress to Ghana football, contrasting it with the perceived decline since his exit.
