Premier League referee David Coote sacked after Klopp video controversy

David Coote, a Premier League referee, was dismissed on Monday following an investigation into a controversial video in which he made derogatory remarks about former Liverpool manager JĂĽrgen Klopp. Referee chiefs deemed his position “untenable” after the footage, which surfaced on social media, showed Coote describing Klopp as “arrogant” and using offensive language.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) announced Coote’s immediate termination in a statement:
“David Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract. Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us, and we remain committed to his welfare.”

The video appeared to reference a Liverpool vs. Burnley match Coote officiated in July 2020, which ended 1-1. Klopp had criticized Coote’s leniency toward Burnley’s physical challenges after the game.

This incident follows additional allegations against Coote. UEFA is conducting disciplinary proceedings after a separate video emerged of him allegedly using a white powder during Euro 2024. Meanwhile, the Football Association is investigating claims that Coote discussed betting on issuing a yellow card with a fan before a Championship match.

Coote’s last Premier League appearance was Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on November 9. The developments mark a swift and controversial end to his officiating career in England’s top flight.
